5 facts about lower back tattoos (Tramp Stamp)
What do we know about lower back tattoos (AKA tramp stamps)? They are sexy. They are a call for attention. They catch guys’ eyes at once. However, they don’t mean that the person who wears them is sexually promiscuous. Here are some interesting facts about this kind of tattoo that is becoming increasingly popular.
1)     There is a good reason a person (especially a woman) may choose to get a tattoo in this specific area of the body. Even though the lower back is not the widest area, it provides with plenty of space for a large design. Besides, in contrast to the abdomen, the lower back won’t stretch significantly during pregnancy or other weight gains, and that is why it provides a more stable site for a tattoo design. As for the upper back, it is not displayed so often, and if you’re getting a tattoo it is probably because you want to show it. With low-rise jeans, the tramp stamps are easily visible.
2)     According to the Urban Dictionary, the lower back tattoo has a correlation with being sexually promiscuous, hence the term “tramp stamp”. Common lore claims that the larger the design, the more licentious the female. Of course, this is not a true statement but just a negative (and sexist) stereotype. It’s not really clear when the term “tramp stamp” started becoming a popular phrase to describe lower back tattoos on girls, but it has become prevalent at the same time the lower back tattoo popularity has increased.
3)     On the other hand, a woman who chooses to display a lower back tattoo is, more often than not, purposed to project a sophisticated, open-minded and sexy image of herself. Choosing a quality tattoo design will improve the look on the tattoo, and it is less likely to produce a negative image on the person who displays it. Anyway, if a girl feels uncomfortable when guys stare at her tattoo, then she shouldn’t display it. Even though, no tattoo gives guys the right to make her a sexual comment. One thing is being sexually assertive, another very different is being sexually promiscuous!
4)     Unfortunately, while girls have grown to accept lower back tattoos as a sign of personality, still most guys consider them “tramp stamps”, so if you are a girl and decide to go for it, then it’s ok. It’s your body, and it’s your right to choose! Nevertheless, you should know that you’ll have to deal with lots of prejudice, especially from men.
5)     Even Barbie wears lower back tattoos! The famous doll has been given a set of tattoos to celebrate her 50th birthday, claiming her love for Ken. The doll’s maker, Mattel, insisted that the move would bring Barbie up to date. Of course, the tattoo had its critics, that claimed it would further encourage the sexualization of young girls who want to be just like Barbie. The new Barbie dolls are part of Mattel’s ‘Totally Tattoos’ range, a temporary tattoo set that girls can apply on themselves.
